Sapele Wood Pen Blanks – 5" × ¾" Square
Scientific Name: Entandrophragma cylindricum
Common Names: Sapele, Sapelli, Sapele Mahogany, Aboudikro
Origin
Sapele is a majestic hardwood native to the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa. It grows across countries including Nigeria (where the name originates from the city of Sapele), Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and extending into parts of East Africa like Uganda and Tanzania. These slow-growing trees can reach impressive heights of 100–150 feet (30–45 m), producing dense, high-quality timber prized worldwide.
Description & Characteristics
Sapele is a versatile and elegant choice for pen turners, often called "African Mahogany" for its rich, warm tones that serve as an excellent mahogany substitute. The heartwood ranges from golden-brown to deep reddish-brown, frequently displaying beautiful ribbon or striped figuring (especially in quartersawn material) that darkens beautifully with age and exposure to light. It has a fine, uniform texture with interlocked grain, giving it excellent stability and a natural luster when finished.
These premium 5" × ¾" square pen blanks are pre-squared, kiln-dried, and hand-selected for quality color and grain. They turn smoothly into classic single-barrel, slimline, or larger pens that develop a sophisticated, timeless appeal.
Turning Tips for Sapele Wood
- Color & Figure: The golden-to-reddish tones and potential ribbon stripe create elegant, professional-looking pens. The color deepens over time for added character.
- Workability: Turns well with sharp carbide or HSS tools at moderate speeds (around 2,000–3,000 RPM). Watch for tear-out due to interlocked grain—light cuts and sharp tools minimize this. It has a pleasant, mild cedar-like scent while turning.
- Sanding & Finishing: Sands to a smooth finish and takes stains, dyes, and most pen finishes (CA glue, friction polish, shellac, etc.) exceptionally well, producing a high luster.
- Dust & Safety: Produces fine dust—use good extraction and a respirator. Moderately dense (Janka hardness ~1,360 lbf) for good durability in finished pens.
Ideal for pen turners seeking a rich, mahogany-like appearance with beautiful figure and reliable turning properties. Sapele creates refined, eye-catching pens that feel substantial and look luxurious in any collection.

The Shawshank tree was a white oak located near Malabar Farm State Park in Monroe Township, Richland County, OH. This tree was featured in the 1994 motion picture The Shawshank Redemption. The tree was at least 100 feet tall and approximately 180 to 200 years old. It played a central role in the film's plot and was one of the most popular tourist sites connected to it.
Although located on private property at Malabar Farm, the tree was a major tourist attraction for fans of the film. The tree formed part of "The Shawshank Trail" which features many of the film's iconic locations and attracts up to 35,000 visitors annually. The farm where the tree was located is sometimes used as a venue for weddings.
On July 29, 2011, half of the tree fell due to trunk rot from ants after being hit by lightning. The tree was further damaged in July 2016 due to strong winds. The remaining portions of the tree were cut down on April 9, 2017, by the property's owner, Dan Dees. The Shawshank Tree has been described as among the most iconic trees in film history. The remains of the tree have been turned into pop culture merchandise such as pens, knives, and hammers.
The material for this item was sourced from Dan Dees, the owner of the Shawshank Tree. The material is distributed and certified by Hardin Penworks, LLC.

Edison first visited southwest Florida and purchased the property to build a vacation home. Completed in 1886 and later named "Seminole Lodge", this home served as a winter retreat and place of relaxation until Edison's death in 1931. The Edison family enjoyed their home, hosting such guests as Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone. Edison's good friend, Henry Ford, purchased the adjoining property, "The Mangoes" from Robert Smith of New York in 1916. Ford's craftsman style bungalow was built in 1911 by Smith.
In 1927, Edison, Ford, and Firestone formed the “Edison Botanic Research Corporation” to further their common interest of developing an independent source of rubber. The combined estates have 1700 plants and 400 species from six continents. Many of these were planted by the “Titans of Industry” themselves. Some of these plants were used to conduct experiments toward the common goal of self-sufficient rubber production.
In 1947, Mrs. Mina Edison deeded the Edison property to the City of Fort Myers in memory of her husband for the enjoyment of the public. It was opened for public tours soon after. The adjacent Ford winter estate was sold after Ford’s death in 1947, resold in 1988, and opened for public tours in 1990.
The Edison and Ford Winter Estates contain a historical museum and 21-acre botanical garden on the adjacent sites of the winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Both Edison and Ford estates along the Caloosahatchee River in southwestern Florida have been added to the National Register of Historical Places.

The United States dollar is the official currency of the United States and its territories per the Coinage Act of 1792. The Coinage Act of 1792 created a decimal currency of coins. These coins are still minted today.
Several forms of paper money were introduced by Congress over the years. The latest of these, the Federal Reserve Note, was authorized by the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. Issuance of the previous form of the currency, U.S. notes, was discontinued in 1971. As a result, currently circulating paper money consists primarily of Federal Reserve Notes that are denominated in United States dollars.
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) destroys currency notes that are found to be imperfect during the printing process. The BEP packages small bags of shredded currency from the destroyed new currency and sells these bags as mementos to visitors at the BEP's Visitor Centers. The BEP also sells five-pound bags of shredded currency.
The shredded currency was sourced directly from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing material was distributed and certified by Hardin Penworks, LLC.
Sierra and Bolt embedded blanks with Sikorsky EH-60A Black Hawk Military Helicopter.
All blanks will come with one COA per blank.
COAs are 4" x 6" card stock with foil COA seal.
The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk is a four-blade, twin-engine, medium-lift utility military helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. Sikorsky submitted the S-70 design for the United States Army's Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System (UTTAS) competition in 1972. The Army designated the prototype as the YUH-60A and selected the Black Hawk as the winner of the program in 1976, after a fly-off competition with the Boeing Vertol YUH-61.
Named after the Native American war leader Black Hawk, the UH-60A entered service with the U.S. Army in 1979, to replace the Bell UH-1 Iroquois as the Army's tactical transport helicopter. This was followed by the fielding of electronic warfare and special operations variants of the Black Hawk. Improved UH-60L and UH-60M utility variants have also been developed. Modified versions have also been developed for the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. In addition to U.S. Army use, the UH-60 family has been exported to several nations. Black Hawks have served in combat during conflicts in Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Somalia, Ukraine, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and other areas in the Middle East.
Major variants include the Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk used for naval purposes, Sikorsky HH-60 Pave Hawk for combat search and rescue, and many other types and upgrades including various export, VIP, special operation types. Various upgrades have taken place over the years and the latest version is the UH-60M.

All blanks will come with one COA per blank.
COAs are 4" x 6" card stock with foil COA seal.
The Sikorsky H-34 Seabat was a versatile helicopter developed by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in the early 1950s. Initially designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) for the United States Navy, the H-34 Seabat quickly proved its adaptability, serving in various roles including search and rescue (SAR), troop transport, and medical evacuation.
Powered by a single Wright R-1820 radial engine, the H-34 Seabat had a top speed of around 123 mph and a range of approximately 200 miles. Its large, roomy cabin could accommodate up to 12 troops or a similar payload, making it invaluable in both military and humanitarian missions. The helicopter featured a distinctive nose-high stance on the ground, with the engine mounted at the front and the cockpit elevated above the cargo area.
The H-34 Seabat was widely used during the Cold War and saw extensive action in the Vietnam War, where it was employed for troop transport, casualty evacuation, and general utility missions. It was also used by the U.S. Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force, as well as by numerous foreign militaries.
Known for its durability and reliability, the H-34 continued to serve in various capacities well into the 1970s, even after more advanced helicopters were introduced. Its legacy includes setting the standard for subsequent helicopter designs and its significant contribution to military aviation history.
