Historical Significance of the USS Texas (BB-35)

The USS Texas (BB-35) is the last surviving dreadnought battleship in the world and one of the most historically significant warships in American naval history. A New York-class battleship, she was commissioned on March 12, 1914, and served through both World Wars, bridging the era of coal-fired dreadnoughts and the modern steel navy.

When Texas entered service, she was among the most powerful warships afloat. Armed with ten 14-inch guns and protected by heavy armor, she represented the cutting edge of naval technology at the dawn of the First World War. In World War II, Texas played a major role in both the European and Pacific theaters. Decommissioned in 1948, Texas was saved from the scrapyard and became the first battleship memorial museum in the United States. The USS Wisconsin (BB-64) is the last of the four Iowa-class battleships to be commissioned and one of the most enduring symbols of American naval power in the 20th century. Laid down in January 1941 and commissioned on April 16, 1944, she joined the fleet at the height of World War II and went on to serve in three major conflicts spanning nearly five decades.

During World War II, Wisconsin operated in the Pacific Theater. During World War II, Iowa served primarily in the Pacific Theater. She screened aircraft carriers, bombarded enemy shore positions, and supported major operations including the Marshall Islands campaign, the Marianas, and the Philippines. In late 1943 she carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt across the Atlantic to the Tehran Conference.

Reactivated for the Korean War in 1951, Iowa provided heavy naval gunfire support along the Korean peninsula. She was decommissioned again in 1958. Nearly three decades later, as part of the Reagan-era naval buildup, Iowa was modernized and recommissioned in 1984. Her 16-inch guns and newly installed Tomahawk and Harpoon missile systems returned her to the fleet as a formidable surface combatant during the final years of the Cold War.

Missouri earned her place in history during the final months of World War II in the Pacific. She supported the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, providing naval gunfire support and screening aircraft carriers against kamikaze attacks. On September 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay, the “Mighty Mo” hosted one of the most consequential ceremonies of the 20th century.
