Black Ash Burl Stabilized Pen Blanks – 5" × 7/8" Square

Scientific Name: Fraxinus nigra
Common Names: Black Ash Burl, Swamp Ash Burl

Origin

Black Ash is native to the wetlands and swampy regions of northeastern North America, ranging from eastern Canada through the northern and eastern United States. The burls form on these hardy trees, prized for their dramatic figure.

Description & Characteristics

Black Ash Burl is a favorite among pen turners for its striking contrast, abundant "eyes," and swirling grain patterns. Stabilized blanks display rich dark brown to near-black tones with lighter creamy or blonde highlights, creating exceptional depth and visual drama. The stabilization process enhances durability, reduces cracking, and allows for a smooth, high-polish finish while preserving the natural beauty of the burl eyes and figure.

Note: Each blank is unique. Some may feature prominent burl eyes, chatoyance, or natural variations in color and pattern that add character to your finished pens.

These premium 5" × 7/8" square pen blanks are pre-squared, kiln-dried, fully stabilized, and hand-selected for outstanding figure. They turn cleanly and produce stunning, one-of-a-kind writing instruments.

Turning Tips for Black Ash Burl

  • Density & Hardness: Moderately hard (Janka ~850 lbf for the base wood; stabilized material performs excellently).
  • Tools: Sharp carbide or high-speed steel tools recommended. Light cuts help prevent tear-out around burl eyes.
  • Technique: Lathe speeds of 2,000–3,000 RPM work well. Sand progressively (220–2000+ grit) and monitor for heat.
  • Finish: CA glue for stabilization touch-ups, friction polish, shellac, or high-gloss lacquer beautifully enhance the dark tones and figure.
  • Dust & Safety: Use strong dust extraction and wear a quality respirator.

Ideal for experienced turners seeking a bold, eye-catching North American stabilized burl that delivers unique results every time.

Dial in sharp carbide or HSS tools, crank speeds to 2,000–3,000 RPM, and take feather-light cuts (0.005–0.015 inches) to dodge melting or gummy buildup. Wet-sand from 220 to 2,000 grit, zap pin-holes with thin CA glue, and crown it with Magic Juice polish for that mirror-finish glow. Dive deeper with our guides:
