Brown Mallee Burl Pen Blanks – 5" × 13/16" Square

Scientific Name: Eucalyptus dumosa / Eucalyptus viridis (and related species) Common Names: Brown Mallee, Brown Mallee Burl

Origin

Brown Mallee is a iconic eucalyptus species native to the arid and semi-arid regions of southeastern Australia. The best burl material typically comes from the mallee scrublands of Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales.

Description & Characteristics

Brown Mallee Burl is prized by pen turners worldwide for its incredibly tight burl eyes, swirling grain patterns, and rich natural color palette. The heartwood displays beautiful medium to deep brown tones, often accented with golden, honey, orange, and reddish highlights that create dramatic contrast and depth.

Note: Some blanks may include light blonde sapwood edges, which is natural to the species and adds unique character to the finished pen.

These premium 5" × ¾" square pen blanks are pre-squared, kiln-dried, and hand-selected for exceptional figure. The dense burl structure delivers stunning visual interest that pops under finish, making every pen truly one-of-a-kind.

Turning Tips for Brown Mallee Burl

  • Density & Hardness: Exceptionally hard and dense (Janka hardness around 2,490 lbf). Turns cleanly with sharp tools.
  • Tools: Use very sharp carbide or high-speed steel tools. Take light cuts to minimize tear-out around the tight burl eyes.
  • Technique: Moderate lathe speeds (2,000–3,000 RPM) work best. Sand carefully between grits.
  • Finish: CA glue, friction polish, shellac, and high-gloss pen finishes all produce outstanding results.
  • Dust & Safety: Always use strong dust extraction and wear a quality respirator.

Perfect for experienced turners and ambitious beginners who want a premium, eye-catching Australian burl that stands out in any collection.

Transform your blanks into showstoppers with these pro-level insights. Our upgraded V2 blanks boast finer shredded plastic for ultra-smooth turning and minimal chip-out— a game-changer over V1. Dial in sharp carbide or HSS tools, crank speeds to 2,000–3,000 RPM, and take feather-light cuts (0.005–0.015 inches) to dodge melting or gummy buildup. Wet-sand from 220 to 2,000 grit, zap pin-holes with thin CA glue, and crown it with Magic Juice polish for that mirror-finish glow. Dive deeper with our guides:
