Historical Significance of the USS Wisconsin (BB-64)

The USS Wisconsin (BB-64) is the last of the four Iowa-class battleships to be commissioned and one of the most enduring symbols of American naval power in the 20th century. Laid down in January 1941 and commissioned on April 16, 1944, she joined the fleet at the height of World War II and went on to serve in three major conflicts spanning nearly five decades.

During World War II, Wisconsin operated in the Pacific Theater. She screened fast carrier task forces, provided anti-aircraft defense, and delivered heavy shore bombardment in support of the invasions of the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Her nine 16-inch guns and robust anti-aircraft batteries made her a valuable asset during the final, intense campaigns against Japan. After the war she was placed in reserve.

Reactivated for the Korean War in 1951, Wisconsin conducted extensive naval gunfire support along the Korean coast. She struck enemy supply lines, troop concentrations, and fortifications with the accuracy and destructive power that only a battleship could deliver. In one notable incident she was struck by enemy shore fire but continued operations, earning a reputation for toughness that matched her sister ships. She was decommissioned again in 1958.

Nearly three decades later, Wisconsin was modernized and recommissioned in 1988 as part of the Reagan-era naval expansion. Equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and updated electronics while retaining her powerful 16-inch guns, she returned to active service as a formidable multi-mission surface combatant. During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, Wisconsin fired Tomahawk missiles against Iraqi targets and later used her big guns in shore bombardment, becoming the last battleship to fire her main battery in combat. Decommissioned for the final time in 1991, she now serves as a museum ship in Norfolk, Virginia, preserving her legacy for future generations.
