Material Story

These elegant pen blanks are crafted from premium **American Black Walnut**, one of the most sought-after domestic hardwoods in North America. Known for its deep, chocolate-brown heartwood with subtle lighter streaks and creamy sapwood, Walnut offers timeless beauty and sophistication.

This wood features a straight to slightly interlocked grain with a fine, even texture that turns smoothly and finishes beautifully. Its rich color and natural luster make it a favorite among woodturners for creating classic, professional-looking pens that improve with age and use.

Each blank is carefully selected for quality grain and color, delivering outstanding stability and workability for both beginners and experienced turners alike.

About Walnut Wood

American Black Walnut is a premium native hardwood found throughout the eastern United States. It is highly valued for its striking appearance and excellent working properties. The heartwood ranges from light brown to deep chocolate or purplish-black, often with attractive figuring and color variation that makes every piece unique.

With a Janka hardness rating of approximately 1,010 lbf, Walnut is durable yet easier to work with than many exotic hardwoods. It has good dimensional stability and takes stains, dyes, and finishes exceptionally well, allowing for a wide range of beautiful results.

Walnut has been a favorite of furniture makers, gunstock carvers, and woodturners for centuries. Its combination of rich color, smooth turning characteristics, and natural elegance makes it one of the most popular woods for fine pens, knife handles, and other turned projects.

Creating with Walnut means working with a true American classic — a wood that brings warmth, depth, and sophistication to every finished piece.

Transform your blanks into showstoppers with these pro-level insights. Our upgraded V2 blanks boast finer shredded plastic for ultra-smooth turning and minimal chip-out— a game-changer over V1. Dial in sharp carbide or HSS tools, crank speeds to 2,000–3,000 RPM, and take feather-light cuts (0.005–0.015 inches) to dodge melting or gummy buildup. Wet-sand from 220 to 2,000 grit, zap pin-holes with thin CA glue, and crown it with Magic Juice polish for that mirror-finish glow. Dive deeper with our guides:
