Clynelish Distillery, located in Brora, Sutherland, in the Scottish Highlands, is a renowned whisky producer founded in 1819 by the Marquess of Stafford. The current distillery, built in 1967, replaced the original site, which was renamed Brora Distillery and operated until 1983. Clynelish is celebrated for its rich, waxy Highland malt, a key component in Johnnie Walker blends, particularly Gold Label Reserve. Its signature 14-year-old single malt, first released in 2002, blends 60% Sherry and 40% Bourbon casks, offering a complex profile of waxy, honey, vanilla, citrus, and maritime notes with a hint of smoke. The distillery uses water from the mineral-rich Clynemilton Burn and sources malt from the Black Isle. Its production process includes a continuous mash, long 86-hour fermentation, and six pot stills, with spirit stills larger than wash stills, contributing to its light, fruity spirit. Clynelish produces 4.8 million liters annually and is a stop on the North Coast 500, offering tours, tastings, and a bar with coastal views. Recognized for sustainability, it earned a gold eco-tourism award, featuring energy-efficient upgrades and accessible facilities.
