Scapa Distillery, nestled in Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands, Scotland, is one of the northernmost whisky distilleries in the world. Established in 1885 by John Townsend, it is now owned by Pernod Ricard. Situated near the Lingro Burn, its water source imparts a delicate, smooth character to its single malts. With a modest production capacity of 1 million liters annually, Scapa operates two copper pot stills, including a rare Lomond still, contributing to its light, fruity profile. Its flagship expressions, Scapa Skiren and Glansa, showcase honey, citrus, and creamy vanilla notes, with Glansa offering a subtle peat influence from American oak casks. Primarily matured in ex-bourbon barrels, Scapa’s whiskies are key components in blends like Ballantine’s. The distillery emphasizes traditional methods, with long fermentation times enhancing its floral and maritime character. Its visitor center, reopened in 2015, offers tours and tastings with views of Scapa Flow, a historic naval harbor. Committed to sustainability, Scapa employs energy-efficient practices and local barley sourcing. Its elegant, approachable malts and scenic Orkney setting make it a hidden gem in Scotch whisky culture.
