1. What material are the plastic seat blanks made from?

Our v1 and v2 blanks are made from recycled HDPE stadium seat material mixed with JB Royal Original Epoxy Resin. HDPE is softer than acrylic but more resilient than wood, making it forgiving yet capable of a beautiful glossy finish. Because of the two different densities (seat plastic + resin), the blanks can be a bit more delicate — always use sharp tools and light cuts to avoid melting.

2. What tools and setup do I need?

• Lathe: Mini or full-size wood lathe — stable setup to reduce vibration.
• Turning tools: Sharp carbide or HSS tools with polished edges (dull tools cause melting).
• Bushings & Mandrel: Proper pen kit bushings for perfect alignment (Turn Between Centers works great too).
• Finishing supplies: Norton SandWet paper (220–2000 grit), thin/medium CA glue, Magic Juice polishing compound, and a soft microfiber cloth.

Square the blank ends carefully with light pressure on a disc sander before mounting.

3. What lathe speed should I use?

Run at the highest comfortable speed — typically 2,000–3,000 RPM for mini lathes. Start around 1,000 RPM for roughing and increase for finishing cuts. High speed + light pressure is the key to preventing heat buildup and melting.

4. How do I avoid chipping, melting, or poor finishes?

• Light cuts: 0.005–0.015" for roughing, 0.002–0.005" for finishing.
• Sharp tools: Hone frequently — a polished edge makes a huge difference.
• Cooling: Use compressed air or light water mist. Avoid oil-based lubricants.
• Technique: Let the tool do the work with minimal pressure.

5. Sanding, Sealing & Polishing for a Mirror Finish

v2 blanks (with shredded material) often produce fine “plastic hairs.” Follow this proven process:

1. Wet sand on the lathe starting at 220 grit (never lower), then progress through 320, 400, 600, 800, and up to 2000 grit if desired.
2. Double CA Seal: Apply 3–5 thin coats of medium/thin CA glue, curing between coats to tame hairs and seal pinholes.
3. Wet sand again to at least 800 grit.
4. Apply 5–8 additional thin/medium CA coats for a strong base.

For the ultimate glass-like shine, use our Magic Juice 6-step polishing compound:

1. Sand to 800–2000 grit and mount on the lathe at 2400–3000 RPM.
2. Apply each step (1–6) with a soft cloth using light pressure for 20–60 seconds.
3. Wipe clean between steps and finish with a final buff.

6. How do I drill the blanks for pen kits?

Best results come from drilling on the lathe using a sharp brad-point or parabolic bit at low speed (500–800 RPM). A drill press with a pen vise also works well. Always double-check your depth — measure twice!

7. Safety Precautions

• Wear eye protection and a dust mask.
• Secure the blank firmly and never leave the lathe running unattended.
• Use good ventilation and dust collection.

8. Common Mistakes & Troubleshooting

• Melting / stringy chips: Increase speed or sharpen your tool.
• Chatter / vibration: Check bushings and balance the blank.
• Dull or hazy finish: Progress through all grits and allow CA to fully cure.
• Pinholes or hairs: Use the double CA sealing method above.
