Curly Maple grows across the temperate forests of North America, with the finest figured stock most commonly sourced from the Midwest and Eastern United States and parts of Canada. The distinctive curly figure is a natural genetic variation found in both hard and soft maples.

Description & Characteristics

Curly Torrified Maple combines the stunning wavy, rippled grain of traditional Curly Maple with the benefits of torrefaction (thermal modification). The "curl" creates a beautiful three-dimensional chatoyancy that shimmers and "pops" under finish, while the torrefaction process removes moisture and sugars, resulting in a more stable, lighter, and slightly caramel-toned blank.

These premium 5" × ¾" square pen blanks are pre-squared, carefully selected for strong curl, and ready for turning into elegant single-barrel or slimline pens that showcase dramatic figure and excellent stability.

Turning Tips for Curly Torrified Maple

Figure & Chatoyancy: The curly pattern produces a striking 3D shimmering effect that really comes alive with a high-gloss finish.
Stability: Torrefaction makes the wood more dimensionally stable and resistant to warping or cracking compared to regular maple.
Tools & Technique: Turns cleanly with sharp carbide or high-speed steel tools. Use light cuts to minimize tear-out, especially around the curly grain. Moderate lathe speeds work best.
Sanding & Finishing: Sands smoothly and takes CA glue, friction polish, shellac, or most pen finishes exceptionally well. The torrefied surface often polishes to a deep, warm glow.
Dust & Safety: Produces fine dust — always use good dust extraction and a respirator.
