Material Provenance & Turning Vision

The wood in this blank originates directly from the USS California, providing makers with a tangible connection to one of the most storied battleships in U.S. Navy history. The material’s natural durability and rich grain make it ideal for creating heirloom-quality pens that tell a story. Suggested projects include elegant desk pens, bottle stoppers, or ring blanks that showcase the ship’s historic character. Pen blanks from similar vessels offer additional options for matching sets.

USS California (BB-44) Service History

The USS California (BB-44) is a Tennessee-class battleship that served with distinction across World War II. Launched in 1919 and commissioned in 1921, she earned multiple battle stars for her combat actions in the Pacific theater. She was present at Pearl Harbor during the 1941 attack, sustaining heavy damage before being repaired and returning to service for key operations including the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaigns, the Marianas, Leyte Gulf, and the final assaults on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Her powerful 14-inch guns and robust armor made her a formidable presence throughout the war. After the war she was decommissioned in 1947 and eventually scrapped, but surviving materials like her teak decking have been preserved for future generations. Enthusiasts value this material for its direct link to pivotal naval engagements and the sailors who served aboard her. The wood’s resistance to rot and tropical conditions made it the preferred decking choice, carrying the physical memory of wartime service into every turned piece. US Navy ship wood collections feature comparable blanks from sister ships including the USS Massachusetts, USS New Jersey, USS Wisconsin, and USS Iowa. Transform your blanks into showstoppers with these pro-level insights. Our upgraded V2 blanks boast finer shredded plastic for ultra-smooth turning and minimal chip-out— a game-changer over V1. Dial in sharp carbide or HSS tools, crank speeds to 2,000–3,000 RPM, and take feather-light cuts (0.005–0.015 inches) to dodge melting or gummy buildup. Wet-sand from 220 to 2,000 grit, zap pin-holes with thin CA glue, and crown it with Magic Juice polish for that mirror-finish glow. Dive deeper with our guides:
