Each standard pen blank measures a minimum of 5" long × ¾" × ¾" square. All blanks are kiln-dried, pre-squared, and hand-selected for striking color and figure. A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is included with every order.

Material Story

Bocote is a premium exotic hardwood native to Mexico and Central America. Its heartwood displays dramatic dark chocolate to black stripes against a golden-brown background, often with dramatic figuring that resembles rosewood or tiger maple. The wood has a fine, even texture and a natural luster that polishes to a glass-like finish, making it one of the most visually striking species available for pen turning.

Turning & Finishing Notes

Bocote turns cleanly with sharp carbide or HSS tools at moderate speeds. Its interlocked grain can occasionally produce tear-out, so light cuts and sharp tools are recommended. The wood sands to a silky surface and accepts CA glue, friction polish, shellac, and most other pen finishes exceptionally well. It produces a pleasant, mild scent while turning and has a Janka hardness around 2,200 lbf, delivering excellent durability in finished pens.

Care & Safety
