Founded in 1786 by George Taylor and Alexander Milne, Strathisla Distillery in Keith, Speyside, is one of Scotland’s oldest continuously operating distilleries. Owned by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard) since 1950, it produces approximately 2.5 million liters of single malt Scotch whisky annually, known for its rich, fruity, and sherried character. Strathisla is the heart of the Chivas Regal blend but also offers acclaimed single malts. The distillery sources barley locally and uses four copper stills—two wash (13,200 liters each) and two spirit (8,600 liters each)—with a 70-hour fermentation to enhance honeyed and orchard fruit notes. Maturation primarily in ex-sherry and bourbon casks, stored in traditional dunnage warehouses, imparts creamy, nutty, and spicy complexity, influenced by Speyside’s temperate climate.
Strathisla’s core single malt, the 12-year-old (40% ABV), is celebrated for its smooth, malty profile with hints of toffee, dried fruit, and oak, earning praise among whisky enthusiasts. Limited releases, like the Distillery Reserve Collection, are exclusive to its visitor center, which offers tours, tastings, and a cooperage display in the picturesque distillery grounds. Strathisla supports the local community through sustainable practices and remains a cornerstone of Speyside’s whisky heritage.
