Material Story

These striking pen blanks are crafted from premium Eucalyptus, a vibrant exotic hardwood prized by turners for its bold color variations and excellent turning properties. Eucalyptus heartwood ranges from rich reddish-brown to golden hues with occasional darker streaks, delivering a dynamic, eye-catching appearance that polishes to a high natural luster.

The wood features a straight to interlocked grain with a fine, uniform texture that machines cleanly and finishes beautifully. Its density provides good stability during turning while remaining workable for both beginners and experienced makers. Whether creating everyday carry pens or standout custom pieces, Eucalyptus offers a unique combination of visual interest and reliable performance.

About Eucalyptus Wood

Eucalyptus encompasses a wide family of species native to Australia and widely planted in other regions. The varieties used for turning blanks are selected for their attractive figuring and workable density. With a Janka hardness typically between 1,500–2,000 lbf, Eucalyptus sits between many domestic and exotic hardwoods, offering durability without excessive difficulty on standard lathe tools.

The wood accepts finishes well and develops a smooth, satiny feel that enhances its natural color. Color can deepen slightly with age and light exposure, adding character to finished projects. Makers appreciate Eucalyptus for its sustainability profile and distinctive look that stands apart from more common walnut or cherry blanks.

Compatibility & Uses

Eucalyptus pen blanks pair excellently with most pen kits, including slimlines, midlines, and larger fountain or rollerball styles. They turn smoothly with standard carbide or HSS tools and accept CA glue, epoxy, or traditional friction polishes such as Craft Coat. Suggested projects include elegant desk pens, segmented accents, bottle stoppers, and small turned items like key fobs or worry stones. For best results, sharp tools and light passes help manage any interlocked grain.

Explore our Premium Hardwood Blanks collection for complementary species like Cherry Wood Blanks or Walnut Wood Blanks to create beautiful multi-species projects.

Transform your blanks into showstoppers with these pro-level insights. Our upgraded V2 blanks boast finer shredded plastic for ultra-smooth turning and minimal chip-out— a game-changer over V1. Dial in sharp carbide or HSS tools, crank speeds to 2,000–3,000 RPM, and take feather-light cuts (0.005–0.015 inches) to dodge melting or gummy buildup. Wet-sand from 220 to 2,000 grit, zap pin-holes with thin CA glue, and crown it with Magic Juice polish for that mirror-finish glow. Dive deeper with our guides:
