Serial Number 77-0252 History: A-10A 77-0252 was delivered to the U.S. Air Force in 1978, serving with the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing at RAF Bentwaters, a key NATO defense unit during the Cold War. Transferred to the 176th and later the 706th Tactical Fighter Squadron, it deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield in 1991. Its front fuselage is now displayed at the Cradle of Aviation Museum.

The Folland Gnat T.1, commonly known as the Gnat Trainer, is a cornerstone of Royal Air Force advanced jet training capabilities. Introduced in 1959, this subsonic, swept-wing aircraft was designed for affordability and simplicity, enabling it to serve as an effective trainer for fast-jet pilots while being suitable for production in less industrialized nations. Powered by one Bristol Siddeley Orpheus 801 turbojet engine, producing 4,520 pounds of thrust, the Gnat T.1 can reach speeds up to 636 mph and has a range of approximately 500 nautical miles, extendable with external fuel tanks, making it versatile for training and aerobatic displays.

The Gnat T.1’s agility is achieved through its compact design, lightweight construction, and responsive controls, allowing for precise maneuvers and high performance in flight. A notable component is the aluminum wing, which provides essential structural integrity and aerodynamic efficiency. For instance, a wing from such an aircraft, replaced due to damage, highlights the material’s critical role in maintaining flight performance. This wing was later repurposed, reflecting ongoing preservation efforts for historical aircraft parts.

With 105 units built for the RAF out of a total 449 Gnats produced, the Gnat T.1 remains one of the most iconic training aircraft ever developed. Operated primarily by No. 4 Flying Training School at RAF Valley, Wales, it has been pivotal in pilot training and gained fame through its use by the Red Arrows aerobatic team from 1965 to 1979, performing in airshows across the globe with formations like the Diamond Nine.

The German V-2 rocket, officially known as Vergeltungswaffe 2 (Vengeance Weapon 2) or Aggregat 4 (A-4), was the world's first long-range guided ballistic missile. Developed during World War II under the direction of Wernher von Braun at the Peenemünde Army Research Center, it first launched successfully in October 1942 and entered operational use in September 1944. Standing 46 feet tall with a diameter of 5.4 feet and weighing 27,000 pounds at launch, the V-2 was powered by a liquid-propellant engine using alcohol and liquid oxygen, achieving speeds over 3,500 mph (Mach 5) and a range of up to 200 miles. It carried a 2,200-pound Amatol warhead, striking targets like London and Antwerp with supersonic speed, making interception impossible. Over 3,000 V-2s were launched, causing significant civilian casualties and terror. Post-war, captured V-2 technology influenced U.S. and Soviet rocket programs, contributing to advancements in rocketry. Nicknamed "Buzzbomb" by some, though more accurately associated with the V-1, the V-2 was the first human-made object to reach space in suborbital flight.

The V-1 flying bomb (German: Vergeltungswaffe 1 "Vengeance Weapon 1") was an early cruise missile. Its official Reich Aviation Ministry (RLM) designation was Fieseler Fi 103 and its suggestive name was Höllenhund (hellhound). It was also known to the Allies as the buzz bomb or doodlebug and in Germany as Kirschkern (cherry stone) or Maikäfer (maybug).

The V-1 was the first of the Vergeltungswaffen (V-weapons) deployed for the terror bombing of London. It was developed at Peenemünde Army Research Center in 1939 by the Luftwaffe at the beginning of the Second World War, and during initial development was known by the codename "Cherry Stone". Due to its limited range, the thousands of V-1 missiles launched into England were fired from launch facilities along the French (Pas-de-Calais) and Dutch coasts or by modified He 111 aircraft.

The Wehrmacht first launched the V-1s against London on 13 June 1944,[6] one week after (and prompted by) the successful Allied landings in France. At peak, more than one hundred V-1s a day were fired at southeast England, 9,521 in total, decreasing in number as sites were overrun until October 1944, when the last V-1 site in range of Britain was overrun by Allied forces. After this, the Germans directed V-1s at the port of Antwerp and at other targets in Belgium, launching a further 2,448 V-1s. The attacks stopped only a month before the war in Europe ended, when the last launch site in the Low Countries was overrun on 29 March 1945.

As part of operations against the V-1, the British operated an arrangement of air defences, including anti-aircraft guns, barrage balloons, and fighter aircraft, to intercept the bombs before they reached their targets, while the launch sites and underground storage depots became targets for Allied attacks including strategic bombing.

In 1944, a number of tests of this weapon were apparently conducted in Tornio, Finland. On one occasion, several Finnish soldiers saw a German plane launch what they described as a bomb shaped like a small, winged aircraft. The flight and impact of another prototype was seen by Finnish frontline soldiers; they noted that its engine stopped suddenly, causing the V-1 to descend sharply, and explode on impact, leaving a crater 20–30 metres (66–98 ft) wide. These V-1s became known to Finnish soldiers as "flying torpedoes".

Material Story

These exclusive pen blanks are crafted from original wooden catwalk planks used during the construction of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in 1937. The lumber came from California’s ancient redwood trees, carefully selected for strength to withstand the brutal winds and harsh conditions of the Golden Gate strait.

During construction, workers built a temporary wooden catwalk foot by foot across the mile-wide opening. Once the bridge was completed, these historic catwalk planks were removed and cut into smaller souvenir pieces. We have transformed these authentic fragments into premium embedded wood pen blanks that capture the incredible history and engineering marvel of one of the world’s most famous bridges.

Each blank is a direct piece of American engineering history — solid, unique, and full of character.

The History of the Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco and California. Spanning the Golden Gate strait — the one-mile-wide entrance to San Francisco Bay — the bridge connects the city of San Francisco to Marin County, carrying both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1.

Designed by engineer Joseph Strauss and opened to traffic on May 27, 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge was an engineering triumph. At the time of its completion, it was the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world, with a main span of 4,200 feet and towers rising 746 feet above the water. It was later named one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Construction was incredibly challenging due to strong currents, high winds, and thick fog. To allow workers to build the massive suspension cables and roadway, a temporary wooden catwalk was constructed high above the water using lumber from California’s ancient redwood forests. Plank by plank, the catwalk was extended across the strait and secured against the powerful Pacific winds.

Once the bridge was finished, the historic catwalk was dismantled. Pieces of this original construction wood were preserved and sold as souvenirs — now extremely rare. Today, these redwood fragments offer a tangible connection to one of humanity’s greatest architectural achievements and a beloved landmark that continues to inspire millions.

Turning one of these blanks into a pen means carrying a small piece of the Golden Gate Bridge with you — a true icon of American ingenuity, beauty, and strength.

The Hughes H-4 Hercules (also known as the Spruce Goose; registration NX37602) is a prototype strategic airlift flying boat designed and built by the Hughes Aircraft Company. Intended as a transatlantic flight transport for use during World War II, it was not completed in time to be used in the war. The aircraft made only one brief flight on November 2, 1947, and the project never advanced beyond the single example produced.

Built from wood because of wartime restrictions on the use of aluminum and concerns about weight, the aircraft was nicknamed the Spruce Goose by critics, although it was made almost entirely of birch. The Hercules is the largest flying boat ever built, and it had the largest wingspan of any aircraft that had ever flown until the Scaled Composites Stratolaunch first flew on April 13, 2019. The aircraft remains in good condition. After having been displayed to the public in Long Beach, California, from 1980 to 1991, it is now on display at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon, United States.

The jersey relic was pulled from a collector card with certified game played jersey swatch from  LeBron James’s Cleveland Cavaliers uniform. The wood is from basketball court flooring used in  Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio.

Embedded blanks with black fabric used to drape the White House's East Room during the funeral of President John F. Kennedy.

This piece of black cambric fabric was used to drape the East Room of the White House in preparation for the State Funeral of President John F. Kennedy. The decor was intended to replicate the look of Abraham Lincoln's funeral. 

According to the oral history of Mr. Lawrence J. Arata, after leaving the White House at 9:00PM on November 22, 1963, he was immediately summoned to return. He was asked by Sargent Shriver if he had any black cloth, as Mrs. Kennedy wanted the East Room draped in black. He had a roll of "black cambric" that he used to finish the bottom of chairs. He noted that many people thought it was black silk, but they are incorrect. He and his wife worked until 4:30 in the morning to complete the desired decorations, matching what had been done for the funeral of Abraham Lincoln. They finished in time for the arrival of John Kennedy's coffin.

The jersey relic was pulled from a collector card with certified game played jersey swatch from Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls uniform. The wood is from basketball court flooring used in the last basketball seasons of the Chicago Stadium where the Chicago Bulls pulled off their first Three-peat winning their first three Conference and NBA championships with Michael Jordan.

Michael Jeffrey Jordan, also known by his initials MJ, is an American former professional basketball player and the principal owner of the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA. He played 15 seasons in the NBA, winning six championships with the Chicago Bulls. His biography on the official NBA website states: "By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time." He was one of the most effectively marketed athletes of his generation and was considered instrumental in popularizing the NBA around the world in the 1980s and 1990s.

Jordan played three seasons for coach Dean Smith with the North Carolina Tar Heels. As a freshman, he was a member of the Tar Heels' national championship team in 1982. Jordan joined the Bulls in 1984 as the third overall draft pick, and quickly emerged as a league star and entertained crowds with his prolific scoring. His leaping ability, demonstrated by performing slam dunks from the free throw line in Slam Dunk Contests, earned him the nicknames "Air Jordan" and "His Airness". He also gained a reputation for being one of the best defensive players in basketball. In 1991, he won his first NBA championship with the Bulls, and followed that achievement with titles in 1992 and 1993, securing a "three-peat". He holds the NBA records for highest career regular season scoring average (30.12 points per game) and highest career playoff scoring average (33.45 points per game). Chicago Stadium was an indoor arena located in Chicago, Illinois that opened in 1929 and closed in 1994. It was the home of the National Hockey League's Chicago Blackhawks and the National Basketball Association's Chicago Bulls.

In addition to the close-quartered, triple-tiered, boxy layout of the building, much of the loud, ringing noise of the fans could be attributed to the fabled 3,663-pipe Barton organ, boasting the world's largest theater organ console with 6 manuals (keyboards) and over 800 stops, and played by Al Melgard. Melgard played for decades during hockey games there, earning the Stadium the moniker "The Madhouse on Madison". For years, it was also known as "The Loudest Arena in the NBA", due to its barn-shaped features.

In the Stanley Cup semifinals of 1971, when the Blackhawks scored a series-clinching empty-net goal in Game 7 against the New York Rangers, CBS announcer Dan Kelly reported, "I can feel our broadcast booth shaking! That's the kind of place Chicago Stadium is right now!" The dressing rooms at the Stadium were placed underneath the seats, and the cramped corridor that led to the ice, with its twenty-two steps, became the stuff of legend. Legend has it a German Shepherd wandered the bowels at night as "the security team."

In the 1973 Stanley Cup Final against Montreal, Chicago owner Bill Wirtz had the NHL's first goal horn installed in the building, reportedly because he liked the sound of the horn on his yacht. This practice would, in the ensuing years, become almost commonplace in professional hockey.

Nancy Faust, organist for 40 years at Chicago White Sox games, also played indoors at the Stadium, at courtside for Chicago Bulls home games from 1976-84, and on the pipe organ for Chicago Blackhawks hockey there from 1985-89.

It also became traditional for Blackhawk fans to cheer loudly throughout the singing of the national anthems, especially when sung by Chicago favorite Wayne Messmer. Denizens of the second balcony often added sparklers and flags to the occasion. Arguably, the most memorable of these was the singing before the 1991 NHL All-Star Game, which took place during the Gulf War. This tradition has continued at the United Center. Longtime PA announcer Harvey Wittenberg had a unique monotone style: "Blackhawk goal scored by #9, Bobby Hull, unassisted, at 6:13."

In 1992, both the Blackhawks and the Bulls reached the finals in their respective leagues. The Blackhawks were swept in their finals by the Pittsburgh Penguins, losing at Chicago Stadium, while the Bulls won the second of their first of three straight NBA titles on their home floor against the Portland Trail Blazers. The next time the Bulls clinched the championship at home, was in the newly built United Center in 1996 (when they did so against the Seattle SuperSonics), their second season at the new arena, and the Blackhawks would not reach the Stanley Cup Finals again until 2010 (in which they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in six games), their 16th season in the new building, although they won their first championship since 1961 in Philadelphia. The Blackhawks last won the Stanley Cup at the Stadium in 1938; they did not win the Cup again at home until 2015 at the United Center.
